Breast implant removal is performed to remove or replace breast implants for patients who have undergone breast augmentation or breast reconstruction involving the use of an implant. There are multiple reasons as to why a breast implant may need to be removed.
At Allure MD, our goal is to provide our patients with personalized care. Breast implant removal is one of the many breast procedures we offer, and we strive to ensure our patients are fully satisfied with the results we provide them.
Reasons for Breast Implant Removal
Breast implant removal can be performed for a wide variety of reasons, including for personal, aesthetic, or medical purposes. Some of the common reasons for undergoing breast implant removal include:
- Dissatisfaction with current implants – In some cases, the patient may be dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts due to their implants. They may have a change in aesthetic preferences over time and may desire a more natural appearance or larger or smaller implants.
- Capsular contracture – The body naturally causes scar tissue to form in the shape of a capsule around the breast implant. Capsular contracture is a complication where this scar tissue is thicker than normal, causing pressure on the implant. This can lead to discomfort, pain, and stiffness, and it can even deform the implant and alter the appearance of the breasts.
- Implant ruptures – While implant ruptures are not a life-threatening issue, they do have a significant impact on the appearance of the breasts. When ruptures occur in saline implants, instant volume loss occurs. Ruptures in silicone implant may not be as noticeable but do require immediate attention. The ruptured implant can be removed and replaced if the patient is still happy with having breast implants.
- Major weight changes – Major weight loss or weight gain has a noticeable effect on a person’s figure. Since the implants were originally meant to complement the person’s figure prior to their weight gain or loss, the breasts may begin to sag or may appear too large compared to the patient’s new physique.
What to Expect from Your Breast Implant Removal
Breast implant removal surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. Each procedure is highly personalized to suit the patient’s unique needs. The specifics of the procedure will be discussed during the initial consultation. If no new implant is being inserted, a breast lift may be recommended to remove excess tissue and tighten loose tissue.
Recovering from Breast Implant Removal
Some pain and discomfort are to be expected. These issue can be managed through medication. Swelling is also common. Mast patients are able to return to work after around one week. Exercise, heavy lifting, and other strenuous activities will need to be avoided for a minimum of four weeks.
