Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?

There are several different reasons why someone may be interested in a breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty. The patient may be unhappy with the large size of their breasts because they draw unwanted attention, throw off the balance of their figure, make it hard to find clothing items that fit properly, or don’t align with their preferred aesthetic image.

Breast-reduction surgery is also commonly performed to address physical issues caused by having heavy disproportionately sized breasts that are a constant source of strain on the body. The weight of large breasts is known to cause muscle and joint pain in areas such as the:

  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Shoulders

Large breasts can also make it difficult to perform normal tasks. Many women find it uncomfortable or difficult to bend over, jog, run, lift weights, and more due to the size and weight of their breasts. Other issues include posture problems, painful bra-strap indentations, and the development of frequent rashes and irritation underneath the breasts.

How Breast Reduction Is Performed

Breast reduction is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. There are several different techniques that can be utilized to accomplish a breast reduction; these will be discussed during the initial consultation.

Incisions are made to allow for the removal of excess glandular breast tissue, fat, and skin. The remaining tissue will be lifted so that it sits higher on the chest and will be carefully sculpted so that it has a rounder and more attractive appearance. The nipples and areolae are also repositioned to ensure the breasts have a natural appearance.

Recovering from Breast Reduction

After the procedure, the breasts will be bandaged and covered, and a special bra will need to be worn for additional protection and support. Swelling and bruising are common during this period, and the breasts may feel sensitive and tender to the touch.

Most people need at least two to four weeks of recovery before they can resume most of their normal activities. Strenuous activities such as heavy lifting will need to be avoided for an additional few weeks.
